South Africa’s Minister of Health signs Antibiotic Guardian pledge

On 4 October 2019, the South African Minister of Health signed his Antibiotic Guardian pledge….. Have you?

Antibiotic resistance happens when the bacteria that cause common, everyday infections in urine, blood, skin, lungs, brain and other parts of the body, develop ways to prevent the antibiotics we use to treat them, from working. When antibiotics don’t work anymore, these infections make you more sick for longer, and in some cases, can be fatal.

Bacteria are becoming more and more resistant because we are using antibiotics in the wrong ways. For example, antibiotics only work when we have an infection caused by bacteria, but we take them for colds, flu, body aches, headaches and many other reasons, which are not caused by bacteria. The more antibiotics we use, the more resistant bacteria become.

Antibiotic resistant infections can affect anyone, which means everyone is at risk. They are happening here and now, and increasing in number. This is happening all over the world, but the situation in South Africa is very serious indeed.

We need your help to prevent antibiotic resistance from becoming an even bigger problem, where we cannot treat you, your family and friends properly, and modern medicine as we know it, is threatened – we don’t only rely on antibiotics to treat infections, but also to prevent them, such is in everyday, routine surgical operations. Without antibiotics, surgery becomes a much more dangerous risk.

So, what can you do to help? Join us in becoming an Antibiotic Guardian to preserve the power of antibiotics for this and future generations. You only need to choose a simple action to keep antibiotics working. Visit the Antibiotic Guardian South Africa at www.staging3.antibioticguardian.com/South-Africa and take an Antibiotic Guardian pledge today!
